Do I really need a CCW Permit?

Many states have recognized the importance of the Constitution (Second Amendment) for carrying a firearm, what does that mean when crossing state lines? With this knowledge many people may misunderstand what Constitutional carry means and believe they are safe to travel from one state to another state without a carry permit because both states are Constitutional carry states. This may get those persons into some hot water because this is not the case. If you are going to travel outside of your home state (state of residence) you will need a carry concealed permit, presuming the state you are going to accepts your states permits, known as reciprocity. Any time you plan to leave your home state and travel it is a good idea to check the applicable laws in each state you will visit. Guns laws change often, being up to date on each state's current laws is important. An example is Iowa and South Dakota have reciprocity so you would be safe carrying across those state lines. An example where reciprocity does not apply is Iowa and Minnesota, where Minnesota does not accept the Iowa permits and you would need to have a permit for Minnesota to legally carry there. In addition to safely traveling between states with reciprocity, holding a carry concealed permit may make firearms purchases faster and smoother depending on the state since your local Sheriff has already complete the background check.
